Coenzyme Q10
So many chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, AIDS, and other are said to respond
to Coenzyme Q10, which is a less known nutrient that would make a great difference to the human health.
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is also known in the name of ubiquinone – a name that indicates its ubiquitous
distributions in many parts of the human body. The Coenzyme Q10 is basically applied by the body to convert
the food that we eat into adenosine triphosphate or ATP, which is the power or the energy on which the body
functions.
Coenzyme Q10 is such a potent antioxidant that is believed to shield the human body from altered oxygen
compounds known as free radicals which may cause some serious disorders and may destroy the essential
tissues. Aside from that, Coenzyme Q10 is also responsible for preserving vitamin E, which is mainly the
primary antioxidant of cell membranes and blood cholesterol.
Due to some findings about the various health benefits of Coenzyme Q10, the nutrient’s supplementation has also
been widely examined as a means to develop the physical endurance for the main reason that this powerful nutrient
has some effects on the energy production. However, there are some researches that do not agree with such
claim. They maintained that Coenzyme Q10 does not really improve athletic performance. And in some
other studies, it has been demonstrated that there is actually no difference in the Coenzyme Q10 that are present
in muscles or blood from those patients who are affected with fibromyalgia compared with the healthy
individuals.
In addition, since Coenzyme Q10 was found out to have a vital role in the production of energy, this nutrient
has been studied by some experts for its function in the infertile men. For that, it is greatly reported from
some preliminary researches that the Coenzyme Q10 supplementation greatly enhance the sperm counts in a group of
infertile men.
Some other studies have shown that Coenzyme Q10 has some value for treating periodontal or gum disease. In
fact, it has been reported that those who are given with the nutrient’s supplementation obtain much better results
than those who are given with placebo as a treatment. Aside from that, the role of this nutrient to the
production of energy is associated to how the human body applies carbohydrates, and so it is found out that
Coenzyme Q10 has some potential for reducing the risk of diabetes.
Similar improvements have been noticed in those who have congestive heart failure; cardiomyopathies, which is a
group of disorders affecting the heart muscle; heart arrhythmias; angina; Alzheimer’s disease; breast cancer; and
hypertension.
In terms of the deficiency of Coenzyme Q10, it is interesting to know that in this sense, deficiency is poorly
understood. However, a deficiency for this nutrient may be a cause of the synthesis problems in the body and
not basically of insufficient diet.
It is then interesting to know that all forms, but not all, of Coenzyme Q10 may be best for a great
health. However, most of the experts suggest the fat soluble form of Coenzyme Q10 since it is absorbed better
than the Coenzyme Q10 in powder or granular form.
