Bifidobacteria: Probiotic Bacteria
Bacteria are not at all bad. There are still some forms of bacteria which are
friendly and plays important role in maintaining our health in its best conditions. Such form of bacteria is called
“probiotic”. Bifidobacteria is then a probiotic bacterium. It is in fact one of the hundreds of useful
bacteria that inhabit the human body’s intestinal tract and aid to combat any form of infection.
As probiotic, bifidobacteria are important for the health of the digestive and gastrointestinal systems.
And in some ways, these beneficial bacteria contribute in a number of ways to aid the overall health. They
are specifically beneficial in preventing the onset of diarrhea that can result from antibiotic therapy.
From some findings, 28 species of bifidobacteria have been isolated from the human intestines and animal
intestines. The bifidocateria exist primarily in the large intestines although some of them inhabit the lower
portion of the small intestine. Along with that a small amounts of bifidobacteria are known to be found in
cultured food products like the yogurt, and acidophilus milk. But for much effectiveness, larger amounts of
this probiotic must be taken in the form of supplements.
There are so many remarkable uses of bifidobacteria. In fact, this probiotic is noted as instrumental in
preventing the development of unfavorable organisms inside the body such as yeasts as well as sickness-causing
bacteria. Specifically, they are beneficial for easing other gastrointestinal conditions like irritable bowel
syndrome and flatulence while improving the overall immunity.
Bifidobacteria are also useful in the treatment and prevention of some vaginal infections, as well as urinary
tract infection. They are also beneficial for counteracting the overgrowth of the fungus known as Candida
albicans.
There are also some findings which hold that bifidobacteria may encourage the healthy function of the digestive
system and it supports the body in absorbing many forms of vitamins. Aside from that, bifidobacteria are
helpful for removing the excess cholesterol from the intestines prior to its being absorbed in the body. In
addition, bifidobacteria are necessary for providing relief in infant diarrhea as well as it ease gas and
flatulence.
As bifidobacteria helps in protecting against colon cancer, they largely form an acidic environment in the
intestine and then stabilize the nutrients that transform the precarcinogens into carcinogens. They as well
prevent the formation of the tumor cells. They fight bad breath, too.
Today, bifidobacteria is available in so many health food stores in the form of capsules or powders, often in
combination with the acidophilus or fructo-oligosaccharides, which are also probiotics that stimulate the
development of healthy intestinal bacteria. However, in taking the bifidobacteria products, one should read
the label of all bifidus or bifidus-acidophilus combination products to ensure that the cultures are really active
and functioning for better health.
Lastly, when buying bifidobacteria products, the expiration date must be checked and always refrigerate the
supplements for great effects. It is noted that both heat and freezing temperatures will eventually kill the
live bacteria. And until now, there is still no reported known drug or nutrient interactions that are closely
connected with bifidobacteria.
